Reading: Title: Daily Life in the Parish of Angochagua, Sierra de Ecuador
Source: El Comercio / UTN Imbabura, 2025 (adapted and compiled)
In the rural parish of Angochagua, in the northern Sierra of Ecuador, families combine agricultural, livestock, and artisanal activities every day. A typical morning begins around 5:30 a.m.: the mother prepares breakfast, usually coffee with milk accompanied by local products such as wood-fired bread, cheese, or potato tortillas. Meanwhile, the father takes care of the livestock—milking cows or collecting chicken eggs—to supply the family's needs and sell in local markets such as Ibarra.
After breakfast, the children help with simple tasks, such as sweeping the yard, watering plants, or helping with the care of smaller animals. They then get dressed and head to school, either walking or taking public transportation from the early hours.
During the day, the mother continues with household chores, weaves handicrafts (embroidery, sweaters), and cares for the elderly in the family. The father travels to the market by bicycle or on foot to sell fresh produce.
At midday, they gather for lunch. Community activities are part of their daily lives: they participate in fairs or support village projects. This routine reflects the combination of tradition, effort, and family collaboration in rural life in the Ecuadorian highlands.
