Feedback

We use past continuous ("was watching") to describe the background action and past simple ("called") for the action that interrupts it. A and C reverse the correct use of tenses, and D incorrectly uses the past perfect.

“Were playing” sets the scene (ongoing activity), and “started” is the interrupting action. A and C use incorrect verb forms, and D confuses the sequence with past perfect, which is not needed here.

Both actions were happening at the same time, so we use past continuous for both. A and B mix the tenses incorrectly, and D is in the present, which doesn’t match the time frame.

The ongoing action is "were driving," and the sudden action is "saw" — past simple interrupts past continuous. B uses "were seeing," which is incorrect for sudden actions. C is grammatically possible but doesn’t show the interruption clearly. D uses past perfect unnecessarily.

Both actions happened simultaneously, so we use past continuous for both. A, B, and C incorrectly combine simple and continuous tenses.

"Wasn't listening" shows the ongoing background action, while "asked" shows the interruption. A and D use the wrong tense combination. C makes both actions ongoing, which doesn’t show cause-effect clearly.
