The first Europeans to settle in Mauritius were the Dutch. They came in 1598 and started living there in 1638.

Sugarcane became the main crop and made Mauritius important for trade.

Mahé de Labourdonnais developed it to make Mauritius an important naval and trading base.

Mauritius became a British colony in 1810.

They faced challenges like cyclones and problems growing crops so they left. Life was too difficult, so the Dutch abandoned Mauritius.

He helped develop spice farming, which became important for the island’s economy.

Indian and Chinese labourers were brought after slavery ended to work on plantations.

They cut ebony trees for wood to use and sell.
