Son bactericidas, es decir, matan a las bacterias. Se unen a la subunidad del ribosoma 30s, interrumpiendo la formación del complejo de inicio de la síntesis de proteinas y causando la muerte celular.

Generalmente son bacteriostáticos, lo que significa que detienen el crecimiento bacteriano. Se unen a la subunidad del ribosoma 50s, lo que interfiere con el cargamiento de la cadena de proteinas y la disociación de la cadena de peptidica.
