Las neuronas son células altamente especializadas en

Reciben la información desde el exterior del cerebro, desde los órganos sensoriales.

Transmiten su información fuera del cerebro hacia los órganos efectores, fundamentalmente músculos (neuronas motoras) y glándulas.

Su información proviene y se dirige desde y hacia otras neuronas. A este último grupo pertenece la inmensa mayoría de las neuronas.

El mensaje de las neuronas del tipo excitadoras favorece la activación de las neuronas destinatarias para que éstas, a su vez, envíen comunicación a otras.

Indepedientemente de la variabilidad neuronal existente, en toda neurona cabe distinguir tres partes: El soma o cuerpo celular, las dendritas y el axón.

Es una fina prolongación del cuerpo celular que tiene como función la salida de información desde la neurona.
