FASD is the umbrella term for a range of effects caused by alcohol exposure during pregnancy, including physical, behavioral, and learning problems.

Alcohol's primary teratogenic effect on the developing fetus is caused by its ability to cross the placenta and induce oxidative stress, which leads to cell death and disrupts fetal brain development by interfering with cell growth, differentiation, and gene regulation.
