โรคทอนซิลเกิดจากการอักเสบของต่อมทอนซิลซึ่งเกิดจากการติดเชื้อไวรัส และแบคทีเรีย หากทอนซิลอักเสบและโตมากมักส่งผลให้เกิดการนอนกรน และหยุดหายใจขณะหลับจากการอุดกั้น

ขณะผ่าตัด ผู้ป่วยจะได้รับการดมยาสลบ จึงต้อง งดน้ำ งดอาหารคืนก่อนผ่าตัด หรืออย่างน้อย 6-8 ชั่วโมงก่อนผ่าตัด เพื่อป้องกันการสำลักอาหารลงปอดขณะดมยาสลบ

หลังผ่าตัดต้องรับประทานอาหารเหลวเย็น ไม่มีเกล็ด ไม่มีกากใยอย่างน้อย 3 วัน อาหารอ่อนมีเนื้อสัมผัสอ่อนนุ่ม เปื่อยยุ่ย มีใยอาหารต่ำ ย่อยง่าย เช่นโจ๊กเละๆ ไข่ตุ๋น เต้าหู้อ่อน เริ่มวันที่ 4 หรือตามคำสั่งการรักษาของแพทย์

หลังผ่าตัดควรแปรงฟัน บ้วนปากหลังรับประทานอาหารเพื่อป้องกันการติดเชื้อ

หลังผ่าตัดควรหลีกเลี่ยงการขากเสมหะ ไอ จาม เบ่งถ่ายแรงๆ และการออกแรงยกของหนัก

ห้ามเขี่ยฝ้าขาวที่แผลผ่าตัดทอนซิลออกเพื่อป้องกันภาวะเลือดออกหลังผ่าตัด

หากจำเป็นต้องทำฟัน ควรทำหลังผ่าตัด 21 วัน เพื่อป้องกันภาวะเลือดออก

ควรรับประทานยาฆ่าเชื้อตามแพทย์สั่งอย่างต่อเนื่องจนครบ

ปริมาณน้ำที่ควรรับประทานต่อวัน น้ำหนักตัว (กิโลกรัม) x 30 มิลลิลิตร เช่นน้ำหนักตัว 50 กิโลกรัม ควรดื่มน้ำปริมาณ 1,500 มิลลิลิตรต่อวัน

ท่านจะมาพบแพทย์ก่อนนัด หรือไปสถานพยาบาลใกล้บ้านเมื่อมีอาการผิดปกติ เช่น มีเลือดออก รับประทานได้น้อย มีไข้ มีกลิ่นปากผิดปกติ ปวดแผลมาก หายใจลำบาก เป็นต้น
