What is Democracy? Democracy comes from the Greek words demos (people) and kratos (power). It means “power of the people.” In a democratic system, important decisions are made collectively, not by a single person. In countries like Colombia, democracy is expressed through voting, public participation, and freedom of speech. Examples in the Colombian and Latin American Context: • Citizens vote to choose their mayors, governors, and the president. • Young people participate in school governments such as personeros and consejos estudiantiles. • Social movements and community groups work together to defend rights and promote peace. Peace and Rights: Peace is not only the absence of war. It means living with respect, dialogue, and fairness. Human rights protect every person, including the rights to education, expression, and safety. In Latin America, many communities work for peace through dialogue and participation. Citizen Participation: Citizen participation means taking part in decisions that affect society. This includes voting, joining community meetings, respecting others’ opinions, and holding leaders accountable. Participation strengthens democracy and helps build a peaceful society.
