Relief rain happens when moist air is pushed up the side of a mountain and cools.

The windward side faces the wind, so it gets more rain.

Rising air becomes cooler, and this cooling forms clouds.

The leeward side is sheltered from the wind and gets little rain.

When clouds become heavy with water droplets, rain falls.

The windward side of Mauritius is the east and south-east of the island. The areas in this part face the South-East Trade Winds. They receive more relief rain. Mahebourg receives more rain compared to other places.

The leeward side of Mauritius is the west and north-west of the island. The areas are sheltered from the South-East Trade Winds and they receive less relief rain. Medine receives less rain compared to other places.
