Feedback

Older adults have a similar pain tolerance to middle-aged or young adults. However, they often have better coping skills and mechanisms to handle pain.

Disruptive behaviors are often the way that individuals with severe dementia will communicate their pain. Individuals with mild-to-moderate dementia can often communicate verbally the pain they are experiencing.

It is a misconception that individuals who are asleep are not experiencing pain. Individuals who are asleep may experience some relief from their pain while asleep; however, they can and will still experience pain.

Distraction is a helpful tool to alleviate some pain. Many people who use distraction as a tool for pain often have severe pain they need distracting from.

Older adults need effective pain control. Opioid use is one of the ways in which we can successfully manage pain. Individuals with a history of substance abuse can be given opioids to control pain. Some individuals with a history of abuse may not want to use opioid analgesics, but that is a preference not a standard of care.

VS are not a reliable indicator of pain intensity.

VS changes are not a reliable indicator of pain intensity.

Decreased mobility, skin breakdown, and incontinence of bowel and bladder are also common changes during end of life.
