Distortion/overdrive makes the bass sound dirty and aggressive, as if the amp is too loud. The notes have a rough, crunchy edge. Overdrive is generally a milder form of distortion.

Chorus makes it sound like more than one bass is playing together. The tone becomes wider and “shimmery”.

Flanger adds a moving “whoosh” or jet‑plane sound. It mixes the original note with a copy that sweeps up and down.

An octaver adds another note one octave higher or lower than what you play. It makes the bass sound thicker and bigger.

An envelope filter reacts to how hard you play. Strong notes open the filter and you hear a “wah” shape, like the bass is talking.

Fuzz is a very heavy type of distortion. The sound is thick, buzzy and almost like a chainsaw, with less clear attack.

Delay repeats the note after you play it, like an echo. You hear the same sound coming back several times, getting quieter.

Reverb makes the bass sound like it’s in a big room, hall or cave. The note keeps ringing with a soft “tail” after you stop playing.

A bass synth effect changes the note into something more electronic. It often has very strong lows and a more robotic, keyboard‑like tone.

Phaser creates a smooth, swirling effect. It sounds like the tone is rotating or gently sweeping through different colours.

A compressor evens out the volume. Loud notes get a bit softer and quiet notes get louder, so everything is more controlled.
