Les civilitzacions més antigues de la història escrita són els sumeris i els egipcis

La combinació rodament-trineu va produir l'enginy que va acabar desembocant en la creació de la roda

Tot i que en Robert William Thomson ja havia patentat al 1845 la roda amb cambra d'aire al 1845, és en John Boyd Dunlop qui torna a inventar la mateixa solució en un moment on la indústria automobilística està neixent i per tant es produeix una ràpida comercialització d'aquest nou tipus de roda.

La roda només era una bona solució en terrenys mitjanament pla tant si eren rocossos, herbossos o sorrencs.
