What is the internal (thermal) energy of a substance?

Choose one or more answers

2

What happens to the particles of an object when it absorbs heat?

3

Which formula represents the change in internal energy?

4

What is the SI unit for heat, work, and energy?

5

What is an adiabatic process?

Feedback

Internal energy includes both the kinetic energy (motion) and potential energy (position and interactions) of particles in a substance.

Adding heat increases the energy of particles, making them move faster and increasing their kinetic energy.

Work done by the system reduces its internal energy. Heat added increases its internal energy.

The SI unit for all forms of energy, including heat and work, is the joule (J).

In an adiabatic process, no heat is exchanged with the surroundings; energy changes occur only through work done. That is why it is a process without gain or loss of heat.
