Banquo and Macbeth happen upon the three weird sisters, who tell them the prophecy.
When King Duncan is killed, Duncan's sons flee the country. This puts Macbeth in position to take the crown.
The weird sisters warn Macbeth that he must "beware Macduff, Thane of Fife".
The witches have said that Banquo will not be king himself, though his sons will be. This makes Macbeth believe that Banquo's family plots against him. He sends assassins to kill Banquo and his son.
"Is this a dagger I see before me?"
Cawdor, Inverness and Edinburgh are all in Scotland, within the reach of Duncan's murderer. The sons decide to leave the country to England and Ireland.
Lady Macbeth hallucinates blood on her hands, and becomes obsessed with washing off a persistent spot of blood from them.
Macbeth's assassins arrive and inform Macbeth that Banquo is slain, but that his son escaped. Banquo's ghost then appears to haunt Macbeth during dinner, and only Macbeth can see or hear him.
