A volcanic vent is an opening in the Earth's surface that allows magma, ash and gas to escape during an eruption.

Millions of years ago, volcanoes erupted in the sea on the floor of the Indian Ocean. After a very long time and after many eruptions, the volcanoes emerged from the sea to form the Mascarene Islands. One of the Mascarene Islands is Mauritius.

An active volcano is a volcano that is erupting now or has erupted recently and may erupt again.

One of the famous natural tourist attractions in Mauritius is the Trou aux Cerfs which is a dormant volcano. It located about 1 kilometer from the town of Curepipe. The dormant, volcanic crater is around 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of around 100 meters.

After a volcanic eruption, ash and dust which have accumulated, later on solidifies into a material called tuff.

A dormant volcano is an active, currently inactive, or "sleeping" volcano that has not erupted in a long time (often defined as within the last 10,000 years) but is expected to erupt again. These volcanoes still have an active magma source, distinguishing them from extinct, "dead" volcanoes. Examples include Mount Fuji (Japan), Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) and Trou aux Cerfs (Mauritius).

These features, which range from small holes to large craters, can be found on cinder cones and composite volcanoes, often filling with water to create crater lakes.
