Additives like EDTA or Heparin can inhibit the growth of delicate bacteria or interfere with chemical analysis.

CSF should be hand-delivered to the lab as soon as possible. The fluid itself provides enough nutrients for a short time, and adding transport media would dilute the already low bacterial load.

While we try to work with whatever volume we get (especially in neonates), 1–2 mL per tube is the standard for full analysis.

Crucial: Neisseria meningitidis and Haemophilus influenzae are highly sensitive to cold. Refrigerating the sample can kill these pathogens, leading to a false negative culture.

It should look like plain water. Turbidity usually suggests a high WBC count (meningitis), while a yellow tint (xanthochromia) suggests an old hemorrhage.
