Amies (with or without charcoal) is primarily used for wound, throat, and urogenital swabs. VR (Venkatraman-Ramakrishnan), Cary-Blair, and APW are all specifically used for enteric pathogens.

Cary-Blair is the gold standard for enteric transport. It has a low nutrient content to prevent commensal overgrowth and a high pH to protect acid-sensitive Shigella.

Vibrio cholerae is halophilic and alkaliphilic. APW (pH 8.6) allows Vibrio to outgrow other intestinal flora within 6–8 hours.

Refrigeration slows down the multiplication of normal colonic flora (like E. coli), which would otherwise outcompete and "mask" the pathogens like Salmonella.
