Feedback

Rats and squirrels are both rodents — they share the same order, Rodentia. All rodents have large front teeth (incisors) that grow continuously throughout their lives!

A scatter hoarder hides food in many separate locations. Squirrels, jays, and some mice all do this. It's a clever survival strategy — even if they forget some caches, those seeds grow into new trees!

Beavers, hamsters and dormice are all rodents. The hedgehog belongs to a completely different order called Eulipotyphla — it is more closely related to moles and shrews.

Beavers cut down trees with their powerful teeth and use the wood to build dams across rivers. This creates ponds and wetlands — making them one of nature's greatest engineers.

Rabbits are lagomorphs, not rodents. Both look superficially similar and eat plants, but rabbits have extra teeth that rodents do not. It's a common mistake to group them together!

The hedgehog is the hibernator! It curls into a tight ball and its body temperature drops to just above freezing. Foxes, mice and birds all stay active in winter. Squirrels solve the cold by burying food in advance.

Hamsters have large, stretchy cheek pouches that can hold an extraordinary amount of food — sometimes almost as much as their own body weight! They carry food back to their burrow in these pouches and create huge underground stores.

The sparrowhawk is the predator! Birds of prey like sparrowhawks, goshawks and owls all hunt squirrels. Ground predators include foxes and pine martens. Squirrels' incredible agility in trees is their best defence.

Eurasian Jays (black-and-white birds) are acorn specialists — they bury thousands of acorns every autumn and are responsible for spreading oak trees across Europe. Like squirrels, the acorns they forget grow into new trees!

Being warm-blooded mammals is the one feature ALL these animals share — including the hedgehog, which is NOT a rodent. They all feed their young with milk, have fur, and regulate their own body temperature. Not all hibernate, not all are rodents, and not all bury food!
