ASCII original usa 7 bits, cubriendo 0 a 127. 0-255 corresponde a 8 bits ( extended ).

El ASCII clásico se diseñó con 7 bits para 128 caracteres; 8 bits da 256 posibles valores.

Los 0–31 son controles no imprimibles usados para formato y dispositivos.

Enter (carácter de control) se usa para terminar líneas. Espa, tabulación, etc., son otros controles.

A partir de 127, los caracteres extendidos dependen de la versión/encabezado para otros idiomas.
