الأمعاء الدقيقة تحتوي على الزغابات الماصة التي تمتص المغذيات بكفاءة، بينما الهضوم في المعدة والكبد يلعبان أدوار أخرى.

المعدة تفرز حمض كلور الماء وإنزيمات تساعد في هضم البروتينات؛ امتصاص الماء يتم في الأمعاء الغليظة.

القولون (الأمعاء الغليظة) يمتص الماء والشوارد بدرجة كبيرة ويكون البراز.

البنكرياس يفرز إنزيمات مثل البروتياز والستريز واللاكتاز إلى الإثني عشر.

الصفراء تساعد في استحلاب الدهون؛ أما الإنزيمات تُفرز من البنكرياس.

المريء يقوم بنقل الطعام عبر التمعج العضلي إلى المعدة.

المرارة تخزن الصفراء وتفرغها في القناة الصفراوية إلى الاثني عشر عند الحاجة.

الأمعاء الدقيقة هي موقع رئيسي لامتصاص المغذيات عبر الزغابات المعوية.

الصفراء (من الكبد) وتenzymes البنكرياس تساهمان في هضم الدهون.
