Explicación

Las siglas se leen como letras individualmente (p. ej., FBI).

FBI se lee como letras: Efe-Be-I. La ONU, GPS y LED son acrónimos o abreviaturas según uso.

Los acrónimos se leen como palabras (p. ej., ONU, GPS).

Las abreviaturas reducen palabras (p. ej., Sr., Dr.).

ONU se pronuncia como palabra: o-nu. Sr. y Dra. son abreviaturas; página no es abreviatura.

Las siglas (FBI) se leen por letras, los acrónimos (ONU) como palabras.

El punto señala la forma abreviada de la palabra (por ejemplo, Sr.).

Las siglas permiten escribir más rápido y evitar repeticiones de palabras largas.

Sr. es una abreviatura de señor; ONU y GPS son siglas o acrónimos.

GPS se pronuncia como palabra: geo-estación-satélite, por ello es acrónimo.
