The Big Bang was not an explosion in space, but rather the rapid stretching and expansion of space itself, which is still happening today.

The Belgian priest and physicist Georges Lemaître was the first to mathematically propose that the universe is expanding, two years before Edwin Hubble published his observational data.

During this period, the universe had cooled down enough for neutral atoms to form, but the very first stars had not yet ignited to illuminate the cosmos.

The CMB is the leftover light from the early universe (about 380,000 years after the Big Bang) when it finally became transparent, making it the earliest light we can detect.

In the standard Big Bang model, opposite sides of the universe are too far apart to have ever exchanged heat, so they shouldn't share the exact same temperature, yet they do.

American physicist Alan Guth proposed the theory of inflation in 1980 to solve major flaws in the standard Big Bang model, such as the Horizon Problem.

Inflation was an unimaginably brief and rapid burst of exponential expansion that occurred immediately after the Big Bang, lasting only for a fleeting instant.
