Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865) was best known for leading the nation through the Civil War and for playing a decisive role in the abolition of slavery. Born in a log cabin, he grew up in a poor frontier family and developed a passion for reading and learning.


He began his political career in the Illinois State Legislature and later served a term in the U.S. Congress. Lincoln rose to national prominence during the Lincoln–Douglas debates, which helped secure his nomination as the Republican candidate for president in 1860. He won the election, becoming the first Republican president.


As president, Lincoln’s primary goal was to preserve the Union. When Southern states seceded, he led the country through the Civil War. In 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring enslaved people in Confederate states to be free—an act that transformed the war into a fight for human liberty.


Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth, just days after the Union’s victory. His leadership, humility, and commitment to equality have made him one of the most admired figures in American history.
