The testament was dictated in 1547.

He asked for burial in the San Francisco monastery in Coyoacán, Nueva España.

He founded the Hospital de la Purísima Concepción, known today as Hospital de Jesús.

He instructed a rigorous review and restitution if he had wronged anyone.

He asked successors to ensure rents for the hospital’s support.

Cortés died on 2 December 1547.

The cause was pleurisy with dysentery and intestinal problems.

He was Marqués del Valle de Oaxaca, Capitán General de la Nueva España y Mar del Sur.

He requested his bones rest forever in Nueva España—the land he expanded for the Crown.

He specified burial in the monastery of the San Francisco order.
