In 1899 - oil seepages were found at Ayer Berkunchi near Kampong Kasat.

12 July 1928 - Seria Well Number One (S-1) was drilled

April 1929, oil was struck and Brunei found its new source of wealth.

From 1929 until 1940, Brunei reached production of 17,500 daily. This was over 6 million barrels annually and export value of $7.5 million.

In 1931, oil royalties amounted $27,000 followed by $68,000 in 1932, $236,000 in 1933, then $793,000 in 1940. Revenue increased. In 1959, oil royalty amounted to $340 million. Brunei was able to loan the Federated Malay States $100 million with no interest.

Infrastructure development, in terms of transportation in 1959, the Edinburgh Bridge and the Gadong Bridge were completed.

1967 – the Brunei Currency and Monetary Board was formed. Brunei issued its own currency.

In 1926, T G Cochrane, the General Manager of Sarawak Oil-field Limited (SOL), and F F Marriot, the Field Superintendent of BMPC, were passing by Seria river en route to Kuala Belait when they caught the smell of oil in the river.

Oil fields were discovered in the South China Sea. The names of these oil wells were: Champion (1972), Magpie (1978) and South West Ampa.

Brunei paid off its $500,000 debt to Federated Malay States by 1936. Brunei was able to make local and overseas investments. $300,000 in 1932 increased to $145 million in 1952.
