الجهاز التنفسي يوفر الأكسجين للخلایا ويزيل ثاني أكسيد الكربون الناتج من التمثيل الغذائي.

الشعر والغشاء المخاطي في الأنف يلتقط الشوائب قبل وصول الهواء للرئتين.

الأكياس الهوائية الرئوية تسمح بانتقال الأكسجين إلى الدم وثاني أكسيد الكربون خارج الدم.

الحجاب الحاجز يهبط ويرتفع ليتمدد الرئتان ويدفع الهواء الداخل والخارج.

الحنجرة تضم الحبال الصوتية وتفتح وتغلق مجرى الهواء أثناء التنفس والصوت.

الهواء الداخلي يزود الدم بالأكسجين، الخارج يخلص الجسم من CO2.

عند السعال تتقلص الحنجرة لتنظيم مرور الهواء وإخراج المهيجات.
