Chemical reaction indicators

by Jeivy gwen Cate
1

Key Indicators of chemical reaction. 1. change-may indicate that the composition of the substance has been cg=hanged, forming new elements or compound 2. Precipitation -the formation of an insoluble solid called a precipitate during the chemical reaction 3. Production of bubbles -may indicate that gaseous products are formed and released during a reaction Note: not all bubbling indicates a chemical reaction 4. Temperature changes- occur due to energy being released or absorbed when chemical bond

2

ACID, BASE AND SALT

3

Types of Chemical Reactions A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances are transformed into new substances with different properties. Scientists classify chemical reactions according to the way atoms are rearranged during the reaction. Combination (Synthesis) Reaction A combination reaction occurs when two or more reactants combine to form a single product. General Equation A + B → AB Example: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O Hydrogen combines with oxygen to produce water.

4

Decomposition Reaction A decomposition reaction occurs when one compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances. These reactions usually require heat, electricity, or light. General Equation: AB → A + B Example: 2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂ Hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen.

5

Single Replacement Reaction A single replacement reaction occurs when one element replaces another element in a compound. The more reactive element replaces the less reactive one. General Equation: A + BC → AC + B Example: Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu

6

Double Replacement Reaction A double replacement reaction occurs when the positive ions of two compounds exchange partners to form two new compounds. General Equation: AB + CD → AD + CB Example: AgNO₃ + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO₃ Silver nitrate reacts with sodium chloride to form a white precipitate of silver chloride
