The first frontier wars started in 1779 after a Xhosa man was shot and killed by a white farmer in the Sommerset East.

The Xhosa won 3 wars before the British got involved. They were able to win against the Boers because of their attack strategies like the guarila tactics as well as forming alliences with the Koikhoi. It was only in 1811 where the British got involved and crushed them in the 4th war.

He was a governor of the Cape. He orderd colonel Graham to push the Xhosa away from the Kei River and station British troops permanently to avoid Xhosa retaliation in 1812.

He was paramount because he allowed the Xhosa xhiefs at war to hide their cattle in his kingdom. His capture and death ultimately led to the war of the axe because of the anger the Xhosa felt after he was murdered.

It led to a famine that Sir George exploited to win the war against the Xhosa's.

They lasted over 100 years with 9 wars being fought from 1779-1878
