Explicación

En 1982, estudiantes e investigadores de la Universidad Carnegie Mellon conectaron una máquina de refrescos Coca-Cola a la red universitaria (precursora de Internet) mediante microinterruptores. Esto permitía verificar de forma remota cuántas botellas quedaban y si estaban frías, considerándose el primer dispositivo inteligente rudimentario de la historia (Kranz, 2016).

Kevin Ashton utilizó el término por primera vez en 1999 durante una presentación en Procter & Gamble (P&G). Ashton argumentaba que añadir etiquetas de Identificación por Radiofrecuencia (RFID) a los productos permitiría que las computadoras gestionaran el mundo físico sin intervención humana (Ashton, 2009).

Mientras que un sistema embebido clásico está diseñado para realizar tareas de control específicas y cerradas dentro de un aparato, el IoT expande esta capacidad al dotarlo de una interfaz de red (IP), permitiendo la interoperabilidad y el análisis de datos a gran escala en plataformas en la nube (Gubbi et al., 2013).
