Op sommige bacteriën na , gebruiken alle fotosynthetiserende organismen naast ook water om deze suikers te maken . Fotosynthetiserende organismen worden ook wel autotrofen of fotoautotroof genoemd . Autotrofe organismen zijn in staat om zichzelf van te voorzien en kunnen zichzelf synthetiseren uit de abiotische componenten : anorganische stof ( w . o . en koolstofdioxide ) en licht . Hierdoor zijn ze van andere organismen voor hun bestaan .
